The blog series that didn't happen...{yet}

It’s really no surprise to me that God wouldn’t let me write about anything without first making sure I know what I’m talking about. THAT, I am grateful for, but I didn’t expect Him to show me just how much more work I needed to do in this particular area until AFTER I made plans to write about preparing our hearts for homeschooling.
I laugh now….a little. Because that is so God.

With all the planning that goes into preparing for the homeschool year ahead…the curriculum choices, school room redecorating, new school supplies, lesson planning etc. I got to thinking…none of that really matters if we don’t first allow God to prepare our hearts. It’s true. Things don’t typically go as well as they could if I forget to consult with God. And sometimes, there are epic fails.

So, this was a good idea, right. I had it in my mind to write about three areas that I felt were important in preparing our hearts. Praying, Inspiring and Grace! I felt like the idea was God inspired, but I didn’t do the one thing I write about all the time…PRAY.

Confession…while I really feel like my heart was in the right place, I actually think it was more in the WRITE place as I was more focused on writing about how to prepare our hearts than actually doing the HEART work. There was no praying, no “thank you for the inspiration, Lord”, no pause or holy hesitation before jumping in with both feet and choosing the dates to do a 3 day series.

God really uses the words poured out here on this blog to reveal himself to me. And reveal himself, He has. He’s so awesome to do that. So, if you read about my upcoming series and are wondering where it is…this is where it begins. With prayer. Please accept my apology for not having it available to you when I said it was going to be up (last week). I am thankful, though, for God’s constant "interruptions" in my days that led to “the series that didn’t happen”.

I was really upset and honestly, irritated with the way life just kept on happening. One interruption after another causing my inability to get to my laptop and write for about 10 days.  I now realize how Holy Spirit led these interruptions were….I hadn’t prayed. I didn’t have my heart truly in the right place…only in the WRITE place. So I’m thankful for God's hand in this as he stopped me dead in my tracks. I never want to get in God’s way.

As for preparing our hearts for homeschooling….I’m still praying for God’s leading in this. As in all things…we need to seek Him first for His wisdom and guidance. That doesn’t mean we don’t ever take leaps of faith. It just means we need to pray first. Every. Time. We need to pray before, during and after that leap of faith..whether that's homeschooling, trying something new or writing a blog series.

So, I’m asking God to write the continuation of this post…..Heart Work: Seeking Him as we prepare for homeschooling. (A.K.A. Heart Work: Seeking Him before, during and after all things!)
"Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him." ~John 7:18

Boy Mom BlogHop 2012

I want to welcome you to House of the Rising Sons!
If you are one of my faithful readers, I want to thank you for continuing to bless me. Welcome back!! And if this is your first time here, so glad you stopped by and I hope you'll stick around for a bit.So nice to meet you here.

One of my very favorite online "hang-outs" is the M.O.B Society. If you aren't familiar with them, it's an amazing community for Moms of Boys, by Moms of Boys. Being a mom of four sweet boys myself, I'm so thankful for a community like this, a place where I feel completely at home and understood. Often I read a post by another writer there and I could swear that she must have been a fly on the wall in my home that day. Every encouraging, hope-filled, honest and real word I read there touches my heart in some way and helps me remember that I am never alone in this journey.

I'm really excited because the MOB Society is hosting a BlogHop again this year. Each day this week I've enjoyed getting to know other moms of boys and am so thankful for each one them.

About Me
My name is Megan. My awesome husband and I have been married for almost 17 years. We have 4 incredible boys, ages 2, 4, 6 and 8 who keep us very active and enjoying life. We're a homeschooling family and are so thankful for the path that our Heavenly Father is leading us on. It's full of twists and turns, rolling hills, and even some sharp corners and switchbacks...but every step of the way is one step closer to Him and reveals His faithfulness to us. He has blessed us with these 4 amazing boys....We adore them.

What is House of the Rising Sons About?
I began writing here 5 years ago when our oldest son was only 3. Over the years this blog has evolved as has my writing and it's content. God has stretched me, encouraged me and led me on a journey toward heart change. When I first began writing about our family adventures, it was mostly in journal style...a way for me to document our life with pictures and stories and update our family and friends about our boys. But over time, God has revealed more of his plan for this blog and has turned it into a ministry of sorts. I am continually humbled and grateful for all that He is doing in my life. My prayer is that this blog will only serve to glorify and honor Him. It's so easy to start out with good intentions and get lost along the way if I'm not seeking Him first. So first and foremost, this site is meant to serve God by serving others.

Here you will find me writing about raising BOYS (of course), homeschooling, family life, my faith, prayer, making Jesus famous to our boys, motherhood and American Sign Language. There are so many amazing women I have met online who have blessed my life with their stories, their testimonies, their raw truth and their friendship. The real life stuff that happens when no one else is looking...those are the moments that speak to my heart and lead me to write because those are the moments that other moms have shared that have blessed my heart so much.

 A Few Areas of Interest {and passions of my own}

I am SO excited for a new 3 Day series I am writing called 3 Days of Heart Preparation for Homeschooling. I would love to have you join us as we seek our God together for changed hearts.

I recently hosted a 7 Days of Hope for the Weary {BOY} Mom series here, based on the amazing book above by Brooke McGlothlin and Stacey Thacker. The entire experience was such a blessing to me and I hope it will continue to bless others as well.

                                                         Unit Study Planner
Recently, I put together a DIY Homeschooling and Blogging Planner. If you are interested in my printables, I'd love to share them with you.

                                                         ASL, teach kids ASL
We are a bilingual family because our 6 year old son was born with a rare syndrome called Pfeiffer Syndrome along with a severe hearing loss. So we have learned and use American Sign Language...and I LOVE to show others how beneficial and fun it is to teach to all kids of all abilities. Our story and more info can be found here...

Please feel free to look around and drop me a note. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you better. And if this is not your first time here, THANK YOU for dropping by. I am so thankful for all of you.

Many blessings to you,

Biblical Truth in Science Experiments

Recently, I joined the writer's team over at the Hip Homeschool Moms. I had no idea what a blessing this would be to me. I am honored to be a part of this incredible team of women who love their families as they journey through homeschooling. I appreciate and am thankful for each one of them.

My very first post is up on their site today. I'm talking about how we can teach biblical truths to our kids through science experiments and have tons of fun doing it! Come on over and check it out at: Hip Homeschool Moms

***UPDATE*** This is one of my most favorite science experiments to do with my boys. They ask to do this one over and over again and can tell you the biblical truth we attached to this activity by heart. If you try this at home with your kids, I'd love to hear how it went. What did they think of the experiment itself and did the biblical truth shine through and make sense to them? It's so fun to come up with these truths together as dive into science! Leave me a comment about the kinds of science experiments you're enjoying with your kids. I'd love to hear about them.

Back to Blogging

So, after a LONG break from blogging and all (most) things online, I'm slowly making my way back. I miss writing and keeping up with some of my favorite blog friends. I also miss the plethora of ideas and encouragement I always get from visiting others' blogs.

I will say, though, that the time away has given me some much needed perspective about what is important to me with regard to how I spend my time online. Now that we have two kiddos to account for in (home)school, a preschooler and a very busy toddler...I find that it's not easy to sneak in a blogging break. More often than not, I am choosing to sneak in moments with Jesus instead. He's what breathes life into my soul and keeps me going each day.

So, I'm revisiting the eBook, Notes to Aspiring Writers: Your Dream, God's Plan. Still, writing is my passion, my dream....but we'll see if it's God's plan. For now, I'm content to write here and get back to my passion of blogging about life with our four little men. They are such a blessing.

Mobile it possible?

Since my laptop has been out of commission, I am searching for a way to blog from my iPod. So, I'm trying out different blogging apps. Bear with me...

Up and running again soon...

I'll be back to blogging again in another week or so. My trusty laptop died recently when I spilled coffee all over it. Note to not check email while holding our sweet 9 month old who is curious about everything around him, including the hot cup of coffee in mommy's "free" hand. Seriously, what was I thinking? I'm just thankful the coffee only landed on my laptop.

Lots of updates and posts coming soon...

Permanent Family Blog Home

Hi everyone!! Yes, it's been a long time...again, since I've updated. There are many reasons, but mainly we've just been too busy living life. I was also having a tough time using the format for our blog. I went back and forth a couple of times between there and here, but didn't like the idea of having some of our posts here and 3 years worth of posts over at Homeschoolblogger. I tried to import/export everything, to no avail. So, I finally just manually copied each post since 2007 to our new blog home here!!! So happy to have everything in one place. Blogger is just much more user friendly for me! I'll be updating more very soon!

Merry Christmas!
